Bismillah Khan, Indian musician (born March 21, 1916, Bihar, India—died Aug. 21, 2006, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India), played an often-scorned woodwind instrument, the shehnai, an oboelike North Indian horn, with such expressive virtuosity that he became a leading Indian classical music artist. Born into a family of court musicians, he was apprenticed to his uncle, Ali Bux, who himself played the shehnai, in a Hindu temple in Varanasi. Although Khan was a devout Muslim, he was considered a symbol of religious harmony and accompanied his uncle in playing at ceremonies for Hindu deities, as well as at weddings. His playing at the All-India Music Conference in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1937 won fame for himself and respect for the shehnai as a classical music instrument. Years of radio performances and recordings followed. Perhaps his most famous performance was at Delhi’s historic Red Fort, as the Indian flag unfurled at the hour of India’s independence on Aug. 15, 1947, and he performed on television every Independence Day thereafter. Though he was internationally renowned, he turned down invitations to perform in other countries before 1966, when the Indian government insisted he perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. When Khan’s death was announced, India observed a national day of mourning

The Shennai was played traditionally in the temple at the role courts and on the wedding occasions. The credit must go to Bismillah Khan to take this instrument on to the classical stage.

Bismillah Khan got his big break with the opening of all India radio in Lucknow in 1938.

Bismillah Khan played the Shennai. on 15th August 1947 at Red Fort. He was the first Indian to greet the nation with his musical instrument. This event was historic because we got independence on that day. He poured his heart out in the presence of number of people including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

He loved India very much that he refused to start a Shennai school in the USA. He load India so much and he did not want to settle anywhere except India. That's why he kept yearning to see Hindustan.

Bismillah Khan loves India and Banaras from the bottom of heart. He says that he misses the holy Ganga and India when he goes abroad. While in Mumbai he thinks of only Banaras and the holy river. And when he was in Banaras he remembers the unique Mattha of dumraon .
