In Maharashtra, dairying has become the farmers’ source of livelihood because of erratic rainfall. This erratic rainfall has led to the shortage of fodder. So, the government organizes “fodder camps” as a relief measures. It also bears all the cost of getter “sugarcane tops from the cane growers” and sells it at a “subsidized rates” to the cattle owners.
In order to protect the endangered breeds of cattle “Deoni, Dangi, Khillar, Gaolao and Red Kandhari”, the government has introduced the following strategy
“i) Introduce selected bulls in villages for natural service;”
“ii) Supply of frozen semen of proven/true-to type indigenous breed for carrying out Artificial Insemination;”
“iii) To involve Breeder’s Association in conservation of indigenous breeds.”
The government has introduced a system of “herd registration, milk competition” etc. This is to identify the high-milk yielders of the endangered breed and to facilitate a buy-back of “pedigreed male-calves” in order to get “quality breeding bulls.”
