The following points are characteristics of vector -

1. The vector should be a molecule of DNA to be able to get cloned with the desired gene.

2. Unique areas of restriction must be present in the vector instead of having multiple regions of restriction.

3. Selectable marker must be present in the vector so that we can differentiate transformed vector from the non transformants ones.

4. The vector, in its host, must be stable.

Common characteristics of vector:

Vectors are defined as those organisms that can transfer infection to a healthy individual from either an infected individual or some infected source without itself being affected.

The common characteristics of the vectors are:

  • Vector never itself gets affected by disease it spreads.
  • Vector is mostly an arthropod.

The infective organism itself don’t spend sexual cycle of reproduction inside vector.

But, there are some exceptions like plasmodium which spends sexual cycle inside female anopheles mosquito.
