This phenomenon is known as electroplating. We do this by a experiment. Take a beaker and fill it with 250ml of water. Dissolve two tablespoons of copper sulphate  (CuSo4)in it add only few drops of dilute sulphuric acid to the copper solution and take a copper plate or articles and clean it with sand paper. Connect it with positive terminal of a battery and and take a iron strip and connect it with negative terminal of the same battery. Dissolve iron and copper in the solution and let the electric current pass throughout it for 15 mins and you will see that the iron strip will get Brown and layer of copper deposited over it
