Electromagnets are used to separate copper from iron in scrap-yards with the help of magnetic field.

EXPLANATION:

Current in the electromagnets is used to generate magnetic field of different intensities. This magnetic field attracts iron because iron is ferrous and is easily attracted towards magnets. When iron gets attracted to the electromagnet, it can be separated leaving copper in the scrapyard. Copper does not get attracted to magnetic fields and so electromagnet can be easily used for separation of iron and copper.
