Neuron - transmission of information

Explanation:

  • Transmission of information by neurons is done by signaling, conduction and transmission.
  • Signaling is done both intracellular and intercellular to send electrical signals down the axon.
  • The receiving ends of neurons or the receptors, dendrites, receive neural impulses from effector cells or the adjacent neurons.
  • This information is passed to the soma or the neuron cell body which is then transferred to the axon through the action potential generated.
  • Conduction of the information through the axon takes place through electrical signals generated from ion transfer through the processes of polarization and depolarization
  • Neurotransmission takes place through electrical (at electrical synapses) and chemical (at a chemical synapses ) neurotransmission processes.
  • Chemical neurotransmission is done by the action of chemical neurotransmitters like acetylcholine.
  • The impulse or information is then from one neuron is transmitted to the other neuron
