There is a scientific revolution in 17th century followed by industrial revolution. This gave a rise to “The age of enlightenment” as they call it.

French revolution is the result of that “explanation” or the social theory based on emotion and “the consent of the governed” movement.

So, the opposing movement called Romanticism all along with the revolution of enlightenment governed the recent society development.

So, philosophers played their own role of thinking and generating ideas throughout the history of mankind. They influenced multiple “revolutions” including that of French!

There were many intellectuals and thinkers in France In the 18th century. Their ideas prompted the people to ask for their rights and ultimately led to the French Revolution. The most important thinkers were Montesquieu, Voltaire and Rousseau.

Montesquieu was born in a wealthy family in France. He was a moderate thinker. He inspired the French people to seek a controlled monarchy system like England.

Voltaire strongly criticized the religious leaders in France. He advocated free thinking. He inspired the people to raise their voice against the church and the royals.

Rousseau said, "The man is born free. But he is chained everywhere." He was the most influential thinker of France. He is also known as the architect of European thinking in the modern era. He was born in a poor family. Tolstoy, Goethe, and Engels were inspired by him. His ideas influenced the education system in France.
