Drainage system of the peninsular rivers in India:

a) Rivers falling into the Arabian Sea:

  • Rivers like Narmada, Tapi, Luni, Sabarmati, Mahi, etc., drain into the Arabian Sea.
  • Most of these rivers originate in western ghats and Vindhyas. These rivers are seasonal and flow to their fullest only for a few months of the year.
  • These rivers flow to the zenith in the months of monsoon as rains are there are major source of water.

b) Rivers falling into the Bay of Bengal:

  • Rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna, etc., drain into the Bay of Bengal.
  • These rivers are perennial in nature and flow throughout the year.
  • The agriculture in northern and eastern India depends on these rivers.
  • The melting snow from the Himalayas is the major source of water for these rivers.
