A Treaty was signed in Paris in July, 1954; very shortly after the French Debacle at Dien Bien Phu. In May, 1959, the North began military operations to liberate all of Vietnam; and the Viet Cong was created. these were southerners fighting for independence (with Ho Chi Minh as President). China and the Soviet Union supplied weapons and money to fight the war; neither sent in troops. The North Vietnamese Army did not engage in direct combat; but supplied logistic support to the Viet Cong. The US began supplying military aid to the south; this gradually increased, until by he early ‘60s, we were participating in a guerilla war. Our “advisors” were engaged in air and ground warfare; and we were suffering fatalities. On September 17, 2017, a Ken Burns Documentary series, “The Vietnam War” will air on PBS. If it’s comparable in quality to his 1990 Documentary, “The Civil War”; it will detail everything that happened, from September 2, 1945 (Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam’s independence from France) until April 30, 1975, when the North Vietnamese Army took Saigon, ending the war.

The battle of Dien Bien Phu was a significant turning point in Indochina. The battle was fought between the French and the Vietminh (Vietnamese Communist and nationalist). The French wanted to reclaim Vietnam as one of their colonies, while the Vietnamese wanted their independence.
