  1. The earliest book printed in Japan was in 868 A.D. called the Diamond Sutra.
  2. It was a handwritten book of six pages with woodcut illustrations.
  3. Later, book printing widely increased reaching many circles of people.
  4. Print was done on cards, leaves, books, magazines etc. Books were also made on nature and women.
  5. Edo(later to be known as Tokyo) became the hub of printing.
  6. Kitagawa Utamaro was famous for his printing style of Ukiyo ('Pictures of the floating world). This art style also depicted human experiences.
  7. These paintings became a source of inspiration in US and Europe, for contemporary artists such as Manet, Monet and Van Gogh.
