It forms a boundary between the plant and the external environment. The epidermis serves several functions: it protects against water loss, regulates gas exchange, secretes metabolic compounds, and (especially in roots) absorbs water and mineral nutrients..

Here is your answer.....

Epidermis is present on the outer surface of the whole plant body. The cells of the epidermal tissue form a continuous layer without any intercellular space. It performs the following important functions:-

  1. Cells of epidermis are water resistant thus prevent excess loss of water.
  2. It is a protective tissue which protect the plant body
  3. It allows exchange of gases through the stomata

Hope it helps!!!!
