Rural roads link ruler areas and villages with towns. These roads received special impetus under the Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojna. Special provisions are made so that every village in the country is linked to a major town in the country by an all season motorable road.

The rural roads can be described as follows:

  • Definition- A rural road network is one that is not located in a city. These are low-traffic highways that connect settlements, allow market access to farms and fields, and are designed to travel at a slower speed.
  • Length- Rural roads comprise 2.7 million kilometres of India's 3.3 million kilometres of classified roads, including around one million kilometres of motorable earth tracks built under various employment-generation schemes.
  • PMGSY- The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana is an ambitious project in India's rural road sector (PMGSY). The PMGSY began in 2000 with the goal of connecting 180,000 habitations with populations of 500 on the plains and 250 in the hills, desert, and tribal territories by 2015. This project has a budget of 33 billion dollars and will build 372,000 kilometres of new roads and upgrade 370,000 kilometres of existing highways.
