Answer:

The structure of the ruminant stomach comprises four compartments and the stomach functions to produce volatile fatty acids from plants, collect foreign materials, help in digestion, collect digested particles, and secrete mucus for healing the damaged lining of the stomach.

Explanation:

Ruminants are animals that feed on plant and plant products. They include animals such as goats, cows, buffaloes, and sheep. They have different structures of stomachs known as ruminant stomachs.

The stomach has four rooms named rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum.

a. Rumen

  • The rumen is big, found on the left side,  lined with papillae for absorption of nutrients, and with many sacs where the food can be stored.
  • It has microorganisms (bacteria) in them that help to ferment plant cell walls into carbohydrates and produce volatile fatty acids from them.
  • About 55% of starch and soluble carbohydrate is digested in the rumen. In addition, it also produces vitamins and proteins from food.

b. Reticulum

Structure:

  • It is a pouch-like structure found in front of the rumen made of tissues similar to honeycomb in structure.
  • A small tissue lies in between the rumen and reticulum, thus called as rumino - reticulum.

Function:

  • It functions to trap and collect foreign particles like metal scraps, nails, wire, etc if the animal has ingested them with food.

c. Omasum

Structure:

  • It is spherical in shape and connected to the reticulum by a short tunnel.

Function:

  • It absorbs water and other substances from digestive particles.

d. Abomasum

Structure:

  • This is the only compartment containing glands thus, called a 'true stomach'.

Function:

  • Those glands produce HCl and digestive enzymes that break down the food.
  • It also secretes mucus for healing the damaged lining of the stomach.
