The Western Coastal Plain is best described as a narrow strip of land between the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. It ranges in width from 50 to 100 km and extends from the present state of Gujarat in the north through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.

The Western Coastal Plains is a thin strip of coastal plain with a width of 50 km between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. It is divided into three sections - the Konkan in the north; the Kannada plain in the central part; and the Malabar coast in the south.Agriculture: Rice is the main crop in this region but pulses, oilseeds are also produced here.
Mining: This region is gifted with number of economically important minerals. Cuddapah and granite rocks, iron ore, manganese, bauxite are also found in this region.
Industries: Engineering, machine tools, tyre and automobile, shipbuilding and IT industries are there in eastern coastal plains.
Transportation: Road and rail networks in the Ghats section is not developed as compared to Western Ghats. But this is being developed in coastal plains.
