Wind is a powerful force that has the ability to shape a landscape. In deserts, wind action changes the landscape through wind erosion in the form of abrasion and deflation.
Wind Action
Think about a tornado or a storm so strong it knocks down trees. These are just two examples that demonstrate the great strength of wind. Wind is very powerful and can drastically change a physical environment. Wind erosion, which is the process of breaking down and dispersing particles by wind movement, is one way that wind can alter an environment.

Wind (Aeolian) Transport
Saltation
Most particles are moved by the wind in this way. Fine particles are lifted into the air and blown horizontally just off the surface. They travel approximately four times longer in distance than in height¹. As they land they rebound off the surface displacing other sand grains which then proceed to undergo the same bound, land, rebound process.
Suspension
Very fine particles of silt, clay and even sand can be lifted into the wind. They may be thrown into the air because of saltation or by the wind itself. Once lifted into the air, these particles can be carried very high (often dependent on particle size) and be transported over long distances, some dust particles may travel around the globe.
Creep
Some particles may be too heavy to be lifted into the air. Creep describes the process in which particles roll and slide along the the surface with momentum from particles in saltation.
