The use of electric fuse is to trip the circuit so we can attach both nails on battery terminals and strip on both nails so when more amount of current will flow the strip will melt and the circuit will be trick

Activity to illustrate the working of electric fuse:

Aim: To demonstrate working of electric fuse.

Apparatus: Thin aluminium strip, two nails, wire, 12 V battery, tap key, cardboard

Procedure:

  • Fix the nails vertically on the cardboard and tie aluminium strip between them.
  • Connect tap key and 12 V battery in series to nails with the help of wire as shown in the figure.
  • Close the tap key and observe the changes in aluminium foil.
  • We see that aluminium starts melting and breaks.

Conclusion:

  • If the current flowing through the aluminium foil exceeds its safe limit, it starts melting due to increase in temperature and finally breaks breaking the circuit as well.
  • Here, aluminium foil works as electric fuse wire which breaks when too much current flows through it and thus protects the electric appliances from getting damaged.
