A chromosome is a compacted structure of DNA and nucleosomes. Nucleosomes are a 8 subunit protein structure that DNA is wrapped around. When a chromosome is formed, the nucleosomes are packaged into tighter and tighter strands. As they are packaged, the DNA is packaged as well.
