Basic Industries produce the primary raw materials for the factories to work.
Steel industry, Aluminium smelters, Cotton ginning mills, Suphuric Acid & Caustic Soda producers are basic industries that feed Automobile, Shipbuilding and other heavy machinery industries.
Intermediate Industries feed on Basic industries to produce semi-finished products to industries that make consumer products. Petroleum refinery is an intermediate industry to feed down stream products like Naphtha to fertiliser or other chemical industries like Plastic industries. Ferro-Chrome alloy industry to feed various kinds of special steels (Stainless Steel is one) is another intermediate industy.

Consumer industries manufacture and sell products directly to the general public.
What is a basic industry?
Basic industries don't depend on other industries to exist; their raw material is not the output of another industry, but rather their raw material is the stuff of nature itself. The list of basic industries is short. Agriculture, ranching, fishing, forestry, mining, and petroleum constitute an exhaustive list
What are consumer goods?
Consumer goods are those commodities which satisfy wants directly. People want them for their own sake.
