In active remote sensing, illumination is done with the help of sensors that make use of their own energy source for this purpose. Thus, measurements can be made at any time of the day.

In passive remote sensing, sensors make use of naturally available light sources to measure energy. As a result, measurements can be made only when these sources such as sunlight are available.

Active remote sensing have it's own sets of lights or illumination, in particular it actively sends a wave and measure that back scatter reflected back to it.

It is used to detect energy when naturally occurring energy is available.

Passive remote sensing on the other hand measure reflected sunlight emitted from the sun.  When the sun shines, passive sensors measures this energy.

It requires the generation of a fairly large amount of energy to adequately illuminate targets.

It has the ability to obtain measurements anytime regardless of the day, time or even season.

It can be used for examining wavelength that are not sufficiently provided by the sun, such as microwaves.
