bacteria metabolize (convert) sugars from your diet into acid that damage the tooth structure resulting in- CAVITIES 
This bacterially produced acid usually attacks the protected areas of teeth like pits and fissures where tooth brush cant reach. As enamel breakdown and minerals r dissolved out of the tooth surface penetrating into underlying dentin causing " CAVITATION ".
