Difference between motor and generator are:

M: The Motor converts Electrical energy into Mechanical Energy

G :Generator converts Mechanical energy to Electrical energy.

M:It uses electricity.

G: It generates electricity

M: The Shaft of the motor is driven by the magnetic force developed between armature and field.

G: The Shaft is attached to the rotor and is driven by mechanical force.

M: In a motor the current is to be supplied to the armature windings.

G: In the generator current is produced in the armature windings.

M: Motor follows Fleming’s Left hand rule.

G:Generator follows Fleming’s Right hand rule.

M: Ex: An electric car or bike is an example of electric motor.

G : Ex: Energy in the form of electricity is generated at the power stations.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ELECTRIC MOTOR AND ELECTRIC GENERATOR

FIRST OF ALL :

PRINCIPLE OF ELECTRIC MOTOR  :

  • It works on the principle of magnetic effect of current. When a current carrying conductor is placed perpendicular to the magnetic field, it experiences a force.

PRINCIPLE OF ELECTRIC GENERATOR :

  • It is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, which is the process of producing induced current in a coil by changing its orientation, therefore by rotating it in a uniform magnetic field.

  • ELECTRIC MOTOR V/S  ELECTRIC GENERATOR

ELECTRIC MOTOR  :

  • It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.

  • It works on the principle of magnetic effect of electric current, therefore when a current carrying conductor is placed perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field, it experiences a force. The direction of force can be found by using the Fleming's Left - Hand Rule.

  • Armature is rotated in the magnetic field by supplying electric current to it by some external source such as battery to get the mechanical work.

  • Split ring is used as a commutator to reverses the direction of flow of current and direction of force acting on the arms of the coil after every half of its rotation. This makes the coil to continue rotate in the same direction.

  • It uses current and magnetic field to produce motion.

ELECTRIC GENERATOR :

  • It converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

  • It is based on the electromagnetic induction therefore current can be induced in a coil by rotating it in a magnetic field. The direction of the induced current can be found by using the Fleming's Right - Hand Rule.

  • Armature is rotated in the magnetic field by some external mechanical force to produce electric current.

  • The slip rings conduct the alternating current or split ring conduct the direct current to the external circuit through the carbon brushes.

  • It uses motion and magnetic field to induce current.

That's it...!!!
