A number of the form a/b, where “a” and “b” are whole numbers, and b is not equal to zero is known as fraction . ... On the other hand, A rational number is a number that can be written in the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0. The denominator of a rational number can never be zero.

A fraction represents a part of a whole or more generally any number of equal parts . The main difference is the definition , the fraction is a part whereas a rational no. is the result of the fractioning. 1/ square (2) is a fraction but is not a rational number.
