A meteor is what you can see as it enters the atmosphere, a “shooting star”. A meteorite is what you can find on the ground. Typically meteors are about the size of a grain of sand but are travelling very fast. Friction with our atmosphere heats them to a point where they burn up. Some larger particles are too big to burn up completely and reach the ground. When they are discovered they are called meteorites.
