Neoteny is seen tailed amphibians. Here, the larva becomes sexually mature and reproduces sexually.

Paedogenesis is seen in the liver fluke where the larva reproduces asexually.
Thyroxin increases general metabolism leading to metamorphosis.

Answer:

The basic difference between neoteny and paedogenesis is that neoteny is the process of suspension (delay) of the physiological development of an organism, whereas paedogenesis is the process of reproduction when an organism has not reached its physical maturity.

Explanation:

Neoteny

  • Neoteny, also called juvenilization, is the process of suspending the physiological development of an organism.
  • As a result of this process, the somatic development of an organism slows down.
  • Neoteny and paedogenesis are types of paedomorphism.
  • The retention of traits in adults that were previously seen in the young is called paedomorphism.
  • The term neoteny was coined by Julius Kollmann and was described by Louis Bolk as an important process in humanization.

Paedogenesis

  • Paedogenesis is the process of reproduction by an organism without attaining physical maturity.
  • It is discussed within developmental biology.
  • Paedogenesis may be described as the attainment of sexual maturity at the larval or juvenal stage of an organism.
  • It occurs primarily due to climatic or environmental conditions like low temperatures, lack of iodine, etc.
  • This concept can be seen in amphibians and some insects.
