Orthodox seeds are seeds which will survive drying and/or freezing during ex-situ conservation.
Recalcitrant seeds (subsequently known as unorthodox seeds) are seeds that do not survive drying and freezing during ex-situ conservation and vice versa.

Orthodox seed also known as desiccation tolerant seeds. In fact, the time span of orthodox seeds can be increased with low precipitation content and cooling temperatures. For Example, situ preservation of conventional seeds is, hence, not questionable.
Recalcitrant seeds consequently known as unorthodox seeds are seeds that do not withstand drying and freezing throughout ex-situ preservation and vice versa.
By and large, these seeds cannot withstand the impacts of drying or warmth less than 10 °C; thus, they cannot be stored for long terms like orthodox seeds because they can dissipate their viability.
