The common method of converting 2-Bromobutane into But-2-ene is by using alcoholic Potassium Hydroxide (KOH), in the presence of Hydrogen bromide (HBr). This solution is heated up which gives But-2-ene as the product.
Usually, But-1-ene is used in the preparation of But-2-ene. 2-Bromobutane, which is a second-degree alkyl halide, becomes an intermediate in this reaction when it is reacted with HBr. This reaction is called as Markonikov reaction.
