Tributary
1- it is a stream / river which flows into a large stream / river
2- it increases the volume of water of the main stream/river
3- it is generally found in the upper or the middle course of the river
4- For example, river Yamuna is a tributary of the Ganga

Distributary
1-it is a stream/ river which flows away from a large stream/ river
2- it decrease the volume of water of stream / river.
3- it is generally found in the lower course of the river
4- For example, hooghly is the distributary of the Ganga
