What are Xylem and Phloem Tissues?

Xylem and Phloem tissues, are types of Permanent tissues. Permanent tissues are those tissues which are obtained from meristematic tissues, once they have lost their ability to divide.


Difference between Xylem and Phloem Tissues

Xylem

  • Xylem transports water in the plant.
  • Xylem consists of trachids, vessels, xylem parenchyma and Xylem fibres.
  • In Xylem, materials move only in one direction.
  • Xylem cells are dead, except Xylem parenchyma.

Phloem

  • Phloem transports food in the plant.
  • Phloem consists of sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem fibres, and phloem parenchyma.
  • In phloem, materials can move in both direction.
  • Phloem cells are living , except Phloem fibres.
