The history of gymkhana cricket led to first class cricket being organised on communal and racial lines. The tournament was initially called Quadrangular bcz it was played by 4 teams.
In the late 1930s and 1940s , players, political figures, etc.began to criticize communal and racial foundations of the quadrangular tournament. A rival first class tournament called Ranjit Trophy was organised but not until independence did it properly replace the quadrangular tournament.
The National Cricket Championship was later renamed as ranji trophy.
