At times, roots appear to be like stems—so what's the distinction? It's tempting to state that stems are above ground, and roots below ground—however that is not by any stretch of the imagination precise. (See sidebar.) One straightforward distinction is that stems bear leaves, and roots don't.

Here are a couple of different differneces -

1. In herbaceous stems, the vascular tissues are contained in bundles; these bundles sit generally close to the surface of the stem.

In roots, the vascular tissues shape a focal center—an area where they're shielded from the brutal movement of pushing through soil. (We are alluding to youthful, non-woody tissues.)

2. In stems, side branches emerge from axillary buds. These buds are situated at the hubs in the leaf axil (the point where the leaf connects to the stem).
