The main policy that is to be adopted to measure the pH of an aqueous solution is that of the sodium ion error, for aqueous solutions.

This is probably the most common and most popular means of measuring the pH value of a substance that is present in its aqueous form.

This is also referred to as the alkaline error  error by scientists.

In this case, a potential difference ids generated by penetrating directly into the surface through a glass electrode and corresponding ions present get replaced by sodium ions.  

Further, the hydrogen ion activity gets lowered and disabled.
