Richard Sheridan was an Irish satirist, a playwright, poet, and long-term owner of the London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He was born on 30th October, 1751.
He is famous for his plays such as The Rivals, The School for Scandal, The Duenna, and A Trip to Scarborough etc. He also plays different roles like a Whig MP for 32 years in the British House of Commons for Stafford , Westminster and Ilchester . He is buried at Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. His plays remain a central part of the canon and are regularly performed worldwide till now.
Richard Sheridan turned to theatre for livelihood after he got married. In his comic Restoration era drama, The Rivals, he satirises the code of conduct and the manners of the fashionable society.
The play, at its first staging, elapsed for an extra hour. The drastic revision was a much better success. His rich wit brings out the idiosyncrasies in the characters in a sharp but not unpleasant manner.
