the significant features of RTI act are :

1. every public authority established or controlled by the government must maintain all its records.

2. Every public authority must publish information about its organisation, functions, duties, important policies and decisions.

3. every public authority must appoint Public Information Officers(PIOs) in all units to provide information to the people.

4. a person who wishes to get information from a public authority must make a request in writing and pay the prescribed fee. On receiving the request, a public information officer must furnish the information within the fixed period of 30 days of filing of the application. This is compulsory. If the matter concerns life and liberty of the applicant, information has to be provided within 48 hours of filing the application.

5. The act specifies that a citizens have a right to take photocopy of documents, inspect the document and request any information. They can also acquire information in the form of printouts, tapes, photocopies or any other electronic mode.

6. An information commission must be set up at the Centre and in every state, to receive the look into complaints from the public.

7. Anything that affects the security of the country, its sovereignty and integrity, its strategic or economic interest, or any information that could help illegal activities are not covered under this Act of government bodies are not bound to give information on questions regarding them.
