Gradation' is a process which changes the surface features of the earth through agents such as gravity, running water, waves, wind, and glaciers. Different agents of gradation show their effect in different regions of the world.
1. Thar - It is the wind. Thar is a desert in North-Western region of India. The action of wind is most prevalent in the deserts. The Thar has vast areas of sand called Sand Sea. When the wind blows the loose dry sand is carried with it. When there is an obstruction or the speed of the wind decreases or when there is rain the sand particles get deposited. Resulting in the formation of Sand dunes.
2. Northern plains - The agent of gradation is the rivers. Since the northern plains in India are cold regions, there are regions where glaciers may also act as the agents of gradation. Glacier is a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near poles. They are found at high altitudes above the permanent snowline especially at high altitudes like mountains. These glaciers move down the valley causing erosion, transportation, and deposition.
3. Gangotri - The agent of gradation is the river. Rivers originate from the mountains or the hills. Different types of landforms are formed as a result of work of river. The rivers are the most powerful agents of gradation. The 3 main functions of rivers in gradation are - erosion, depositional, and transportation.
4. Mahabalipuram - It is a small beach place situated on the coastal side of southern India. The sea merges with the Bay of Bengal. So, the agent of gradation here should be the waves. Waves are the undulations formed on the surface of water bodies like river, sea, and ocean. Sea waves are the effective agent of gradation on coast and shore. Erosion, transportation, and deposition are the 3 main functions of sea waves. A beach is formed by the deposition of the material carried by the waves. Sea waves carry small particles and deposit them from one part of the shore to another. Features formed by depositional work of waves are beaches, sandbars, sand spits, and lagoon. Beaches are formed by the deposition of sand, gravel and, pebbles.
