Bubonic plague is a kind of plague spread by rats.
When the French occupied Vietnam, they wanted to rebuild Hanoi into a modern city. However, in 1903, a bubonic plague began to spread across the modern parts of Hanoi.
The part of Hanoi having French majority was well taken care of and maintained.
The part where locals lived was left uncared for and the sewage pipes and stagnant water were not managed properly and the system itself was subpar. These unhygienic conditions led to an increase in the number of rats in the city. These rats infiltrated the well functioning sewage systems in the French part of the city, spreading the plague wide and far.
