The most peculiar characteristic of the Hindu society is the system called varna and jati. Varna is caste on the basis of position in the society and jati a sub-caste. (Varna in Sanskrit actually means colour). Varna is the positional label imposed upon different castes as a yardstick for social classification

The concept of varna and jati:

Varna - color or class:

  • Traced to Purushsukta verse of Rig-Veda

Four Varna’s are:

1. Brahmins - priest, teacher

2. Kshatriyas - King, Warrior

3. Vaishyas - Traders, Merchants.

4. Shudras - labor, servants.

  • It is believed that in Vedic time Varna was based on karma (work) and Guna (qualification) and there are some examples that confirm that theory.

Jati - caste:

  • It is somehow the same as Varna but you belong to caste by birth you can't change that like Varna.
  • It denotes to describe thousands of communities associated with their job.

Varna and their Jati’s are:

1. Bramhin (varna) - Panch Gaud, Sarswat, Koknastha, Deshastha, Vaishnav, Smarth, Dravid (jati/sub communities)

2. Kshatriya (varna) - Rajput, Gurjar, Maratha, Jatt(jati)

3. Vaishya (varna) - Baniya, Vani, Marvari, etc(Jati)

4. Shudra (Varna) - chamar, mochi, dhobi, koli, etc(jati)
