The President of India is the highest authority and constitutional head of the country. The followings are the main powers and functions of President of the country:

  1. Administrative power: The President of India appoints the Prime Minister and other ministers, state governors, judges of Supreme Court and high courts, chief of Army staffs. He is the supreme commander of the three-armed forces.
  2. Legislative power: The president is the part of Indian Parliament. The president can convene the session of the parliament and even dissolve the Lok Sabha if necessary. He can nominate 12 members for Rajya Sabha and two members for Lok Sabha. No bill can become an act without his consent.
  3. Economic power: The Finance Minister present the budget in the Parliament as the representative of the president. The budget come into force after signing of the president. No new test can impose without the consent of the president.
  4. Judicial power: The president appoints the judges of Supreme Court. He can repel death penalties to any person convicted for any offence.
  5. State power: The president appoints state governors. State assemblies need his prior permission before discussing certain bills, impose tax or other financial matters.
  6. Emergency power: The president can declare emergency in the country by Article 352. He can also declare emergency only in a state or a region by article 376 in case of forest aggression, economic and political crisis, major natural disasters.
