Powers and functions of the president can be categorised into:
Executive powers
Legislative powers
Financial powers
Judicia powers
Diplomatic powers
Military powers

1)Executive powers: All executive actions of the Government of India are formally taken in the name of President.
He can make rules specifying the manner in which the orders and other instruments made and executed in his/her name shall be authenticated.
He can seek any information relating to the administration of affairs of the union,and proposals for legislation from the prime minister.
2)Legislative powers: summon or prologue the Parliament and to dissolve the Lok sabha.
He can promulgate ordinances,when the Parliament is not in session.The ordinances must be approved by the Parliament within 6 weeks from its reassembly.He can also withdraw an ordinance at any time.
3)Financial powers:He constitutes a Finance commission after every five years to recommended the distribution I revenues between the centre and states.
4)Judicial powers:He appoints the chief justice and the judges of supreme and high courts.
5)Diplomatic powers:The international treaties and agreements are negotiated and concluded on behalf of the president.
Sends and receives diplomats like Ambassadors,High commissioners and so on.
5)Military powers: Supreme Commander of the defence forces of India.Appoints the chiefs of the Army,the Navy and the Air forces.Declares war or concludes peace,subject to the approval of the Parliament.
7)Emergency powers: The president of India can proclaim emergency in three conditions after getting the written recommendations of the Cabinet.
National emergency (Article 352) arising out of war,external aggression or armed rebellion within the country.
Constitutional Emergency (Article 356) arising out of the failure of the constitutional machinery in the states.It is also known as President's Rule.
Financial Emergency(Article 360) arising out of a threat to financial stability or credit of India.
