Both parasites and saprobes are heterotrophic. Which means they are dependent on nutrition on other organisms, they cannot rely on themselves for nutrition.

However there are differences. Parasites are heterotrophic on living organisms, plants and animals, whether they are ectoparasites or endoparasites they always harm the host. Sometimes by evolutionary processes, they become symbiotic with the host. This is not anymore parasitism, because they benefit each other. Just like the Rhizobium leguminosarum bacteria in legumes.

Parasites are further divided into two, which I think is what you are looking for. Biotrophs and necrotrophs. The difference is that biotrophs do not kill the host plant, but they still are harmful to it, as parasites. Necrotrophs are parasites that kill the host plant in order to obtain nutrition.

Saprobes, or as plants were formerly called saprotrophs are heterotrophic on dead and decaying matter. Remains of plants and dung for example.

Best Answer: Parasite : Some organisms for theirs requirement of food nutrients which are must for their survival, growth and reproduction, depend on the food produced by other living organism called host. Such living organism which deprives the host of valuable nutrients, is called a parasite

Saprotrophs: Some organisms like fungi, have a different mode of nutrition. They secrete digestive juices on the dead and decaying matter and convert it into a solution. Then they absorb the nutrients from it. This mode of nutrition in which organisms take in nutrients in solution form from dead and decaying matter is called saprotrophic nutrition. Plants which use saprotrophic mode of nutrition are called saprotrophs.
Hope it helps...!
