Self pollination occurs when there is the transfer of male gametes from the male gametophyte or the anther of a flower to the stigma of the flower which is also the part of same plant. In self pollination pure line is maintained.

While in cross pollination the male gametes gets transferred to the stigma of a flower which must belong to the similar species but must be a different plant. Cross pollination results in genetic variation of the off-springs.
