Your answer goes like this ...
Let the first part given be X
And the second part be concluded as 40-X
[1/4]x=[3/8]*[40-x]
⇒[1/4]x=[120-3x]/8
⇒8x=480-12x
⇒8x+12x=480
⇒20x=480
⇒x=480/20
⇒x=24.
Now,We got the first part,i.e 24
And the second part⇒40-24=16.
