As per the given data ,
- Image distance (u) = - 18 cm ( distances are always measured from the optical center of the lens )
- focal length (f) = 20 cm
By using lens formula ,
➜ 1 / f = 1 / v - 1 / u
➜ 1 / v = 1 / f + 1 / u
Now let's substitute the given values in the above equation ,
➜ 1 / v = 1 / 20 - 1 / 18
➜ 1 / v = 9 - 10 / 180
➜ 1 / v = - 1 / 180
➜ v = - 180 cm
The image is formed at a distance of 180 cm on the same side as that of the object
Magnification
➜ m = v / u
