Yes, I agree that John's skills in sales helped him to win his lady love. At first, as John was a travelling salesman when he was going to Cincinnati, he saw his lady love. This proves that it was his profession, which helped to meet his lady love. He followed her everywhere she went and lastly found her home. Then, he promised her that he would enter her home to meet her dad. He kept up his promise and did so. As he entered her home, the right time to use Pescud's sales skills arrived. He pretended as if he had come to make a sale, But slowly and steadily, he changed the track and told Mr.Colonel Allyn about his lady love. Thus, he used his sales skills to win his lady love. This can be made clear from the below textual evidence :  

"I gave him my business card and said I wanted to see the Colonel "

This shows that Pescud has used his sales skills to meet and win his lady love.
