Pi's piousness existed prior to his fathers growing beliefs of atheism. However, his fathers belief of atheism was more driven towards taking pi into a secular vision.

To some degree, it could be considered that pi's relation to the animals became stronger because his father forbade him and that fueled his belief system as well. So, his religious beliefs must have come from the acceptance of different religions. And embracing of religions led him to piousness.

It is not possible that the piousness of Pi was any sort of response to the atheism of his father as he had lot of respect for his father.

His own findings of truth, love and beauty led him to love all three religions.

He managed to extract good from each of them.
