Answer:

When people are born in this world they are their true authentic selves but as we grow we try and adapt to the environment for the purpose of survival and react to the reward and punishment/ consequence model to act in accordance with what is acceptable in our environment and what is not.

A child usually does anything in order to achieve a sense of belonging in the world in order to get his or her needs to get met to survive. So a child in this case rejects certain aspects of themselves in order to adapt to the environment and his or her personality and behaviour is shaped by the environment.

The rejected parts of a person’s self remain within a person and doesn’t usually come out in public. So when a person is alone or with the people they trust they might let down their guard and expose their inner rejected self.

There are some people who totally deny the characteristic of the rejected self they have and engage in self deception. They try and behave totally contradictory to their inner rejected self and can not even tolerate when they see this trait in others. This is a defence mechanism to avoid us experiencing the internal shame that comes with identifying with a rejected part of ourselves.

For example a person who has a rejected characteristic of being lazy might engage in being extremely workaholic and might judge other for not being that way and might call them lazy. This concept is called projection wherein we criticise others for having the same traits we have in ourselves. We all engage in projection all the time and whenever we are judging others for having certain traits it is because we have the same traits and we rejected that side of ourselves long time ago. What is not a part of ourselves doesn’t cause is trouble when we see it in others.
