Gold (Au) has two main valences 1 and 3. But due to his noble character, it does not react with other atoms. So probably the concept of valence is not so clear in Gold as in more reactive elements.

Some elements show variable valency because of the different electronic configurations. The atomic number of Gold is 79, and its symbol is Au. Many elements like sulphur(S) , iron(Fe) etc have valency of 2,6 and 1,3 respectivly . It has the valency of 3 or 1 .
