S. Dharambal started a movement called 'Elavu Varam' as, till 1940 the Tamil teachers had no due recognition in the society and they were also not paid equal salary like the other teachers.

 As a result the Educational Minister Thiru Avinasalingam Chettiar announced equal pay to Tamil teachers like other teachers.

Apart from this, she also participated in the Hindi agitation program and went to Jail many times.
