Draw the structure of the following atoms showing the nucleus with their nucleons and the various orbits with respective electrons :
(i) Carbon (Z = 6, A = 12)
(ii) Oxygen (Z = 8, A = 16)
(ii) Phosphorus (Z = 15, A = 31)
(iv) Fluorine (Z = 9, A = 19)

Answer:

The diagrams for the given are attached below.

Explanation:

We know that the number of shells any of the elements has in its electronic diagram depends upon its atomic number and the number of electrons. Here we have,

Z = The atomic number

A = The atomic mass

Therefore the elements given have the following structures:

(i) Carbon  we have Z = 6, A = 12

Z = 6       K L M N

              2  4 -   -

Number of the protons = 6

Number of the neutrons = A - Z = 12 -6 = 6 neutrons.

(ii) Oxygen  we have Z = 8, A = 16

Z = 8       K L M N

              2  6 -   -

Number of the protons = 8

Number of the neutrons = A - Z = 16 - 8 = 8 neutrons.

(ii) Phosphorus we have Z = 15, A = 31

Z = 15      K L M N

              2  8  5   -

Number of the protons = 15

Number of the neutrons = A - Z = 31 - 15 = 16 neutrons.

(iv) Fluorine we have Z = 9, A = 19

Z = 9       K L M N

              2  7 -   -

Number of the protons = 9

Number of the neutrons = A - Z = 19 - 9 = 10 neutrons.

(v) Aluminium  we have Z = 13, A = 27

Z = 13      K L M N

              2  8 3  -

Number of the protons = 13

Number of the neutrons = A - Z = 27 - 13 = 14 neutrons.
