COPRA (Consumer Protection Act):-
A major step taken by the Government of India in 1986 was the enactment of Consumer Protection Act 1986, popularly known as COPRA.
In order to protect the consumers from exploitation and to save them from adulterated and substandard products and deficient services the Consumer Protection Act came into force on 15th April 1986 and it applies to the Whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The enactment of Consumer Protection Act succeeded in bringing pressure on business firms as well as the Government to correct business conduct, which may be unfair and against the interests of the consumers at large. The enactment of COPRA has led to the setting up of separate departments of Consumer Affairs in Central and State Governments to spread information about legal process which people can use.This information is spread through the posters and advertisements on television channels.
