election commission is a body that governs the election process and design over the fixation of election dates declimination of constituencies, checking the interference of any party which is in power preparing Electoral rolls etc.
the various roles of election commissions bare listed here :-
declimination of constituency:-
the whole area where elections are to be held is divided into so many clear-cut constituency so that in actions are in an organised way
polling and declaration of results:-
on the fixed date of the elections the elections are conducted it is the duty of the election commission to set up election booths, to appoint the presiding and the polling officer to count the votes, and to declare the result effectively and without any hindrance.
Candidate standing for elections:-
the candidates who was standing for the election and the winning to contest the election file nominations of to a particular date then the election commission scrutinizes their papers and accept or reject the nomination paper as the case may be.
Voter's list:-
another important feature of the election commission is to prepare the voter list in which the name of the voters are contained along with their specific details and information it is also the work of the election commission to maintain their data and see that it doesn't get lost or distorted.

The election commission play important role in ensuring free and fair elections. The Election Commission of India is a very powerful and independent institution and is not answerable to any other political institution.
It has a wide range of powers, which are enlisted as:It takes decision on every aspect of the elections right from the announcement of elections to the declaration of the results.It implements the Code of Conduct and punishes any candidate or party that violates it.During the times of elections, it can order the government to follow some guidelines towards making the elections free and fair.
At the time of election duty, the government officers work under the control of EC and not the ruling party.For the last 15 years, the EC is exercising its powers to full potential and has even increased them. Today the free and fair elections are just because of the working of EC.
To make your life simple i will make it into points.
1) It prepares the electoral roles and revises them before every general election.
2)When the election officials came to the decision that,the polling was not fair in some booths or even in entire constituency, they order a repoll.
3) The work of conducting elections to the Parliament and State legislature is entrusted to the Election Commission.
4)It is an autonomous body.
5) The ruling parties often does not like what the Election Commission does.But they have to obey.
6) It controls and directs the machinery of elections throughout the country.
